The UVI Observatory, located at 1325 ft atop Crown Mountain on the
island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, houses a research-grade 0.5 m
automated Cassegrain telescope. The telescope is maintained and operated by
astronomers at the University of the Virgin Islands, the College of Charleston,
and South Carolina State University.

Repair of the telescope - October 2007.
After a second lightning strike in late summer 2007, Neff & Giblin work to repair the telescope control
system.
Recent News:
- Repair of the telescope - May & June 2007. After a lightning strike
hit the communications line at the observatory more than a year ago, the hardware and electronics
have been obtained and repairs have begun to bring the 0.5 m robotic telescope online.
- Recent College of Charleston Physics Department graduates Kiwi Davis (now
at University of Michigan) and Stephen Hughes (now at Florifa Institute of Technology) have
developed a series of Perl scripts for the automated GRB response project under the guidance of Prof.
Tim Giblin. (2006)
- A refined pointing mesh was obtained by CofC student Lew
Wadworth under the guidance of Prof. Jim Neff as part of his senior project. Work
also continues on GRB response preparation - January 2005
- Commissioning of the telescopes continues - October 2004
- College of Charleston astronomers receive NSF grant to perform rapid
response observations of Gamma-Ray Bursts in support of
NASA's Swift mission.
